4th August 2007 update: Four Months in. I've completed 18 tasks in total, and abandoned 1. I am half way through another (almost literally, I'm saving the second half of War and Peace for the train back home), and have made arrangements to complete about 3 more in the coming month, plus the one remaining for October.

Another option would be to take a dictionary and randomly point at a vocab each day, and then memorize it! If the word is too difficult, just pick another one! ;)
